Why are we all running?

Why is everyone suddenly running? With London Marathon places being announced last week, it feels like an apt time to discuss this growing trend. Let us know if you got in! You’ve probably noticed the hoards of people around the quarter-life crisis mark becoming very into running. Some of us at the studio have also caught the running bug. Maybe you’ve seen a local run club sprinting past in their Hoka’s and Salomons, or clad in other equally technical running vests. Or perhaps that’s just a London thing…

However, this isn’t just a local trend. According to Google, searches for “how to get into running,” “how to start running,” and “running route near me” are all up by 50%. Additionally, Strava reports that women under 25 are the fastest-growing demographic on their platform.

So, what’s fuelling this running boom? Here are a few key factors:

Runtok

The rise of running content on TikTok, affectionately termed “Runtok,” has played a significant role in popularising running. Influencers and everyday runners share their journeys, tips, and motivational stories, inspiring a new generation to lace up their shoes and hit the pavement.

Economic factors

With a looming recession and increasing gym prices, running offers an affordable way to stay fit. It’s a cost-effective exercise that doesn’t require a gym membership, making it accessible to many.

Run clubs

Run clubs are becoming the new social hubs, even likened to new dating apps. These clubs offer a sense of community and camaraderie, encouraging people to stay committed to their running goals. Strava has even introduced a DM feature, making it easier for runners to connect and motivate each other.

Health consciousness

Gen Z is more health-conscious and sober than ever before. Running fits perfectly into this lifestyle, offering both physical and mental health benefits. It’s a way for young people to stay active, manage stress, and achieve a sense of accomplishment.

Running isn’t just a trend; it’s becoming a cultural shift towards healthier, more connected living. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just getting started, there’s never been a better time to join the movement. So, grab your running shoes and see what all the buzz is about—you might just find your new favourite pastime.
